A Box Finish

Today I woke up to a bright and sunny Sunday morning.  A perfect morning!  I thought I would share with all of you how I do my box finishes.  It all started with Angela's box, from Hooked on Stitches.  This will be my third box so far this year and now I have requests to make more! My brother wants one with some sort of moose/deer or hunting theme.  If anyone has a good monochromatic design that fits a hunting theme could you let me know?!

So here's a mini tutorial.

Step 1: Buy box! I usually get my boxes at the dollar stores although I have purchased one at Michael's.  It would be good to sand it down first before painting. I have yet to do this! I just found some sandpaper in my hubby's tool box so I'll be using it for the next box I do.

Step 2: Disassemble box by taking off all the hinges with a little screwdriver and set aside in a cup or bowl so you don't loose the tiny screws.  The clasp part of the box doesn't come off so you will have to paint carefully around those pieces.  If you do get paint on the hinges, don't panic.  Take a q-tip and some water and dab off the paint.  Start applying paint with a medium, regular paintbrush (you can get this at Michael's), using a craft paint.  I usually give the box 2-3 coats, letting each coat dry before I apply another coat. You can also use a glossy paint for a nice finish but those are more expensive.

Step 3: If you don't use a glossy paint, then you can spray hobby craft enamel over the paint.  I usually take the box outside to do this because there are so many warning signs on the can!! Let the box dry completely to touch before attaching any sort of stitching/fabric onto the box.

Step 4: This step can vary depending on if you want to put your design directly on the top of the box, or if you want a more raised look, like the Ink Circles box I made.  For this design, I used some batting on top for a more cushy look. I used some craft glue to attach the batting to the top of the box.

Step 5: Attach your design with a craft glue. I used a toothpick to apply the glue along the sides of the top of the box and made sure my design was square before gluing down the sides.  I folded the edges like I would wrapping a present. I added a little glue to the triangled edges to make sure they stuck to the fabric on the sides.

Step 6: Embellishment!  The fun part!! To hide those unseemly edges of fabric, add a ribbon, lace, or flat embellished cording. After attaching the sides with glue, I looked at my assortment of ribbons and played around with a few options.  I settled on a purple ribbon but decided it was too plain and added buttons on top of the ribbon.  I think it turned out great!

Last step is to reattach the hinges and screws into the box and there you have it, the box finish!

Stay tuned and I will be back with the twisted ribbon finish!

Life's A Stitch Traveling Pattern

Well hello everyone!

I'm back from my family reunion/vacation.  I will do a follow up post on that after this one!

The traveling pattern truly did travel with me.  I failed to realize when I picked out the teeny tiny 40 count fabric, that it would be quite difficult to stitch on during the car trip.  I had to wait until I took it out in the sunshine to be able to see the holes! My poor eyes! I finally finished the satin stitched border today sitting in the sunshine of course! So I hope you like my version and if you like to stitch it next, please comment on this post letting me know you want to stitch it next.

Details: Stitched on Mirage PTP 40 ct. with threads from VMShoppe, Dinky Dyes and WDW.

Until the next post, happy stitching!!

Winner of the Traveling Pattern

And the winner of the Traveling Pattern is...............................

So I made the draw the old fashioned way and threw pieces of paper in a bowl and had hubby pull a name.  I kinda like that version instead of the random generator.  More fun for me!!  Sharon, I will be mailing this off to you tomorrow!!!  For all of those who entered to win, thank you and keep following the pattern because you could be next in stitching it!!

I will post later on this week about my other projects.  I finished a RAK, and a bunch of other things this weekend!!! Can't wait to show you my work!!

Have a wonderful day!

Off to strike....in the rain!

Traveling Pattern - Thankful for Ewe!

Hello my lovelies!!

I am excited to tell you all that I had won the Traveling Pattern "Thankful" from Mouse a couple of weeks ago! I received the pattern and a lovely card from her last Friday, and have finally finished stitching it!! It was such a fun stitch to do and I would love to pass it along to the next person! So please leave a comment on this post only and I will draw a name from those who would like to stitch it.  I did not have any of the colours that the pattern called for so I used what I had.  I played around with a couple of different colours for the flowers and decided to use my favourite pink.  I think you will like the result of my colour choices.
Look at that cute sheep!! He's adorable!!

Started: Feb 27th
Finished: March 2nd
Stitched on 32 ct Lambswool Linen
Threads: DMC Snow White, 938 - sheep, legs, words
Dinky Dyes: Madi's Rose - flowers
Gentle Art Threads: Baby Spinach - grass, leaves   Gingersnap - tree, vines

Take a look at Mouse's finish, Gracie's finish, and Tricia's finish.  They are all really lovely and unique!!

A quick update on my other projects.  I spent most of the day today working on one of the RAK's and am very happy with the result.  Just a couple of finishing touches to do tomorrow and I'll send it off.  The other one still needs to be worked on and I can't decide if I want to make a pillow or a pin keep...I think I'm leaning more towards a pin keep.  Hopefully I'll get it started tomorrow, but I want to finish my mom's ornie.  I managed to cut out two circles of mat board today and it took awhile!! I also stitched up Shepherd's Bush's Tiny Garden and need to add the silk ribbon around the edge.  Yes, I have been a busy bee today!! I have made a bit more progress on Jane, but I won't show you a pic yet! Eve's been stitched and so she needs her partner before I show you!!

Titus was quite the helper today! Take a look at how he helped me.
My fur adds a nice fluffy texture to your fabric mom!!
If I place my paws here, will this help you cut the fabric?
Peek a boo! I see you!!
There you are mom!!

In other news, I've been very busy with work and with the upcoming strike on Monday.  It's been very stressful here for us teachers and the news hasn't painted us in a positive light, which makes my blood boil.  Our government is trying to pass Bill 22 which will be highly detrimental to our public education system if passed. It will increase class sizes and there will be no limit to class composition.  It will give all the power to the administrators to fire at a whim and replace with lower paid teachers. I could explain a lot more to you, but I will refrain because I'm tuckered out trying to defend my profession to people.  Plus I want to keep my stitching blog a nice peaceful place for people to visit and enjoy my stitching and my little stitching friend, Titus!!

Hopefully all will end well and we can move on to the more important stuff: teaching.

Take care everyone! Big hugs to all! I could use some!!!

Have a wonderful weekend! I will be visiting people's blogs this weekend!!
