My Beloved Grandfather

This is time of miracles and renewed faith in the Lord Christ Our Savior.

My Beloved Grandpa passed away peacefully on December 22nd, 2012.  My Nana, my two uncles, auntie and I were all with him since Thursday evening, watching and praying over him.  My mother arrived from Prince George on Friday and that was a miracle she even got there since it was the busiest time of year to fly. When she was on the phone with the airline, the said it would be an 1 hour 45 minute wait to get to an agent.  She prayed and she got through in 10 minutes.  The flight was delayed due to de-icing and backed up flights.  She arrived an hour and a half later and made it in time to see her father and say the Akathist to the Archangel Michael (who helps the soul prepare for the afterlife).  My Grandpa was waiting for my mom.  I know he was.  We left late on Friday night to get some rest and at 3:00 am, I knew when the phone rang that he had passed.  I think he was waiting to be alone with my Nana to pass away.

My Grandpa was an amazing man.  He loved his family and the church with so much devotion.  He was an extremely talented man in music and highly intelligent as an economics professor at UBC.  He co-founded the CGA with a number of others and had written some economics books. He was beloved by his students for his fairness and gentle demeanor.  His love for education and UBC he passed to me and I was lucky to have him in my graduation procession.  I am a proud grand daughter!!

He ADORED my Nana and was often singing "My Irish Rose" to her at any given time.  He always bought her jewelry regardless of her protests of being frugal and he was a hopeless romantic.  He once said to me " Women are more intelligent than men and if the world was run by women we would not be in such a terrible state as we are."  Men are nothing without women.  That is what he said!

His love of music passed on to many of us and I will always remember getting a birthday call from Grandpa as the best part of my birthday.  He would phone and sing "Happy Birthday" in the most beautiful tenor voice....loud too!! Even as he mind faded away from Alzheimer's, music stayed with him until he could no longer speak.  He often would break into an operatic song and make us all jump at the clarity and virtuosity of his voice.  He played classical guitar on a very special guitar called a harp guitar.  It was owned by the famous Dr. Perot, it was given to my grandfather and it is now considered a museum piece.  He could have chosen to become a professional classical guitarist like the famous Julian Bream, whom he knew and studied with, but he chose my Nana and a family as his path in life.
Me and My Grandpa's guitar.  Please forgive the bags under my eyes.
I will always remember him and his gentle, humble soul who inspires us all to become more like him.  He was a peacekeeper and despised any bickering or anger.  He loved the church and was a pious man.  He never missed going to church and never stopped fasting and praying. He was the choir conductor of our church and I used to love going up to the choir and watch my grandfather conduct and sing the church liturgy.  He also read the Epistle in church and read/chanted the readings in a voice that filled the church and the whole block!!
I love you Grandpa so much and I will always remember you.  You inspire me to become the best teacher I can be.  The best person I can be.

Vechnaya Pamyat

Wait until 4:16 when all the voices come in.  My Grandpa would listen to Church Liturgical Music all the time.

Memory Eternal!!!

TUSAL and Pre-IHSW!!

Hello everyone!

Oh how I've missed you all and your wonderful blogs!! I've been trying to pop in every once in awhile but it has been difficult to keep up right now.  I know you all understand.  My job has been wonderful, however tiring.  November is fast approaching and I will be writing reports soon.  Actually two tomorrow!! The kids are wonderful and they are all I am thinking about. My husband and mom tell me to take some time for myself, and I should I know, yet I cannot help it!!

I realized the other day... Tuesday to be exact, that it was a New Moon...which meant....

TUSAL TIME!!!

So here are my orts!! There are a lot more than last month's.  Somehow I got some stitching done?!?!

Poor Titus...being teased with threads.

I had to cut this photo session short because after this photo, Titus almost ate some of the threads!!!

Hmmm...my last post was just before Thanksgiving.  I should probably show you a picture of what we had.  We also gave thanks for many things...I love this time of year!

Our Thanksgiving was wonderful...can't believe it was two weeks ago! Wow how time flies!! Here is our delicious dinner that my Aunties made us!!

I also received the most beautiful picture from my Auntie, a very talented photographer.  My header photo is hers too. We are trying to find a special place to hang it.

Love birch trees! They make me so happy!!

I should have taken a photo of my Jane for a pre-IHSW shot, but I didn't.  Instead I'll show you some stash I received. I ordered some Gray Jobelan and wasn't too happy that the "gray" was actually taupe.  Not that I don't mind the taupe, I WILL use it, but I really want some gray jobelan or some soft linen.  Can anyone suggest a linen/jobelan/monaco fabric that is an actual medium to light gray???

The "Gray" is on the right and the blotchy Creme Brulee is on the left, my first LHN chart!!
I also ordered some R & R Reproductions Creme Brulee 40 ct and noticed some brown blotches on the fabric.  I asked the lady at 123stitch and she said it's part of that fabric.  Of course she offered me to return the linens if I don't want them...but I'm too busy to package and mail off stuff! Plus I figure why not use that fabric for some coffee dying or a prim design??! Right!?

Here's Titus getting into the mix of things!!

Okay I'm off now...need to finish my pillows I'm making!

I'll update on Monday! I'm hoping to get a lot done on Jane!!

Hugs to you all :D

A Pathetic IHSW and TUSAL

That's right folks.... I had a pretty abysmal IHSW this weekend for stitching.  Thank you darling Joyce for putting it on....I plan to actually do better next time.

lfhjaksdjfhalksdhjf

That's how I feel!! I can't write for some reason...I think my mind is overheating like my computer with my massive TO DO list to do!

I can't even focus on blogging right now because I have tons of kids files to read and sort and organize.  Which is great.  Not complaining at all. I just wish there was more time to manage all that I am managing. I'm am woefully behind on emails and commenting but I am keeping up with a lot of your blogs!! Sometime soon I will get in the swing of things again and be able to stitch, blog and comment...all things I love to do.  The desire for stitching has pretty much disappeared until I get my brain sorted out.  Thank you all for joining my giveaway and hello to my new followers! Too bad you joined when I'm in a slump :( Usually I have more energy and interesting things to share with my readers.

In case you missed the link....here's my 2 Year Giveaway post.  Be sure to enter!!

Anywho.  How about some photos.

I thought of flushing my pathetic threads down the toilet...but thought better of it.
I lost so many of my threads while camping/traveling....

I really do wish I could have breakfast all day long.  Tori Amos sums up my sentiments on breakfast in the song Purple People; "Breakfast, every hour, it could save the world!"
The crow apparently thinks so too.

My Tётя Mira's Russian rooster egg.

My Matryoshka dolls...perhaps from my Tётя Mira (Tётя=Aunt) on my desk in my classroom.

Oh and the stitching I managed to do one evening.  I worked on my lovely Jane.  I wish I could spend my days finishing her up.  Perhaps this weekend......

Here's Titus too for those who love to see him.

Pretty boy.....pretty pretty boy.  Lol!!

Hugs to you all and know that I think of all of you and appreciate all your lovely comments and encouragement.  If only I could make another me to manage my workload!!! Crazy thought!

Stitching, Threads and Sipping Red Wine

Is drinking red wine a good thing while blogging?

Hmm.....Well even if it's a no..WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!! I'm celebrating by myself! Isn't that fabulous?!?! Funny how the day you can actually go out and do anything, everyone is either away, or busy.  I think that's what people call....Murphy's Law? No wait...that's something else....what do you call it?

Anywho.

You didn't come here for that, but if you did, grab a tea, coffee or wine like me and sit back and enjoy what I'm about to show you. Join me in celebrating!!!

First off.  I managed to stitch 1 design while at Tatuk Lake (really far away from any sort of civilization...no cell phone reception..AT ALL!!!! ACK!) I really enjoyed my time with my family and wish it could have been a longer visit.  I fished, as many of you saw in the last photo, I stitched, I played LOADS of crib (only won 2 games...sigh), and made the morning fires without my Dad's firestarter...hehehe! I really wished I had a video of my brother, a firefighter, splitting wood with an axe.  He's got so much strength it's insane.  I think all of us were awestruck watching the log split into two and fly.  SERIOUSLY!!  I had many wonderful walks and took lots of pictures, some of which I will upload and create an album on picasa and link it...not yet though!

Here's my little autumn stitch that I really loved stitching.  It's a freebie from Le Chalet des Perelles stitched on 28 ct. R&R18th century brown, using DMC, NPI silks, GAST and WDW.  My Uncle Paul really enjoyed watching me stitch this piece and liked that I had a beautiful hobby.
We saw loads of beautiful birds flying above us such as Pelicans, Osprey and Sparrows.  My camera couldn't zoom out enough to catch the Ospreys diving down to catch the Kokanee salmon but I could get this little guy. Isn't he the cutest?!!
He looks like he's pissed at something.  Maybe he doesn't like his picture being taken?!!

Enjoy these...it gives you a good feeling :D
Stunning rainbow hey? There's a photo I'll post of me that my dearest sweet mamma took of me...and you have to laugh.  A BUG FLEW INTO MY EYE PRECISELY THE MOMENT SHE TOOK THE PHOTO.  Okay I'll post it here for your viewing pleasure.
Love it!

Seriously though.  The bug had a LOT of space to fly around in....why my eye???????????????????????????

Okay now onto another freebie I stitched while in the car driving to and from Edmonton.  It's Plum Street Sampler's Christmas Coffee tree that I think was made for me.  I stitched the tree trunk with GAST Espresso, the beans with WDW Molasses, the green is Nancy's Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe..super lush to work with, and the off white is GAST's Oatmeal.  I stitched it on 32 ct Natural linen and loooooved stitching it.  I have a finish in mind but can't get to that until later on in the month.
I went through the Rocky Mountains for my first time, well my second but my first time was when I was 16 traveling with my Ukrainian dancing troupe and it was night, didn't see a thing....so my first time really.  Um where was I.....

Ah...mountains.  Amazing!

The pandemonium of trying to take a photo of baby elk.

Oh, you want a Titus pic? Here is my big, beautiful baby!!
Some stash that arrived while I was in no man's land.
Um....any of you work with that perle cotton stuff? Or know what it's used for? I tried some last night and I'm not liking it at all.  I didn't know when I ordered it that it would be so thick.  I don't do canvas work and can't foresee myself doing that anytime in the future.  I think I may give them to the 2nd or 3rd place winner...still mulling that part out.

Some Vikki Clayton silks and silk threads since I read on a person's blog (sorry can't remember where) that she is discontinuing her silks line :( Big booo from me since I just found out about her when I ordered her silks for Jane.  Oh well.  Her silks are amazing. I can't wait to work with them.
Looooove the colours!!!!

The last bit I want to share with you is the AMAZING gift that Jo from Serendipitous Stitching sent to me for being her 2000th comment post.  I was tickled pink, literally, when I saw what she made for me.  She also sent me a BBD chart that I can't wait to stitch! THANK YOU DEAREST JO!!!!!
I love how she made it in my favourite colours and stitched my name! It's very precious to me.  Every little stitched piece that has been made for me is cherished so much.  It's my third piece from someone other than myself and I love it to bits :D

Okay....I hope you made it thus far and haven't been too bored.  I started looking through the blogs today but had to jet off to go school supply shopping.  I ended up buying a new computer chair that was half off and will be delivered Tuesday.  The Ikea one I'm sitting on is broken and has no back. LOL!!!

Love and hugs to you all

Landed and Hit the Road Running

Well hello everyone!!

I have loads of news to share with all of you and like my post title says, I've hit the road running!!! Or at least it feels like it! Last Wednesday, as we arrived in a town with cell reception, FINALLY, I called my hubby because I was desperate to hear his voice, and he tells me that a principal has been calling and calling and calling.  So I start to panic, on a road beside a Tim Horton's in a teeny tiny Northern BC town called Vanderhoof.  I get the number, call the principal, and WHAM....I GOT A JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm now officially a Learning Assistance Teacher and have a GAZILLION things to do! I'm loving it but my head is swimming and right now, I can't even focus on blogging properly and I have a blogoversary coming up! So this Saturday, before I go teacher supply shopping, I'll write a proper post with pictures and everything and hopefully try and catch up with all of you.  For those who pray, please pray for me that I do my job well and help these children learn.

Take care and

Big love and hugs from me and my sweet Titus!

Tea Party

“I say let the world go to hell, but I should always have my tea.”
  Fyodor Dostoyevsky

It's a Tea Party, hosted by Parsley and her daughter! I figured since the sun came out and I am a little blue today, it's a perfect time to have my spirits uplifted with a spot of tea.  I picked Cream of Early Grey tea from David's Teas, pulled out my grandmother's Royal Albert tea cup that has the sweetest little cross stitched rose design.  I didn't bake anything because I'm all by my lonesome and I'm not about to eat a dozen scones, biscuits or cookies on my own! I will share with you my recipe for those vegan chocolate chip cookies that are delish!!
Titus joined my tea time too!

I wore my laced Victorian gloves while sipping my tea.  Mmmmmm!!!

The Recipe:

Anne’s Vegan Chocolate Cookies

1/2 cup vegan margarine (I'm guessing you can use oil too, but maybe 1/3cup instead)
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup cane sugar (or white)
~this bit I changed~ it says 1/2 Tbsp egg replacer + 3 Tbsp warm water mixed...I just followed my egg replacer recipe and added 1 Tbsp egg replacer with 3 Tbsps warm water and mixed before I added it to the wet ingredients...it worked so I'm not going to mess with my methods~~If you have flax egg, that works too, just add 1 flax egg
1 tsp Vanilla extract
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp kosher salt
1/2 cup whole wheat pastry flour (didn't have this so I just used my unbleached white flour--worked fine)
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup chocolate chips (use whatever you have on hand, I used the chocolate bar, coconut and pecans--eyeballed it too)

Oven at 350 and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a small bowl, make the egg replacer mix, set aside.
With a mixer, beat the margarine until fluffy, add the brown and white sugar and beat for 1-2 mins until creamy.
Beat in the egg replacer mix.
Beat the remaining ingredients and fold in the chocolate chips, nuts, coconut.
Shape balls of dough and place on baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 mins or up to 14 mins.  Allow to cool for 5 mins on the sheet and then transfer to cooling rack.

It says for crisper cookies, use the 1/2 margarine and 1 tbsp olive oil. I guess they spread out more with the oil.

I hope you all have a wonderful day and enjoy your tea!!!

Hugs

Anne and Titus

Христос воскресе!!!!

Indeed He is Risen!!

Христос воскресе means Christ is Risen.  The phonetic pronunciation of the Russian is "Khristos Voskrese!"

Pascha was lovely and hectic all at the same time.  It always is for our family.  Thursday night we read the Passion Gospels, which I enjoy reading.  Then on Friday, we brought out the shroud of Christ, it was a very somber and tearful service.

Then came Holy Saturday.  Usually I go for the morning service where we read a big chunk of the Bible, however, I hadn't been home properly in over a week so I had to manage some things at home.  I went over to my Nana's mid-afternoon to help with dying the eggs.  My Nana already made the Syrnaya Pascha bread  and my mother made the Kulich bread which we eat along with the syrnaya pascha cheese...so rich and tasty!
Syrnaya Pascha
The below photo is not my Mother's Kulich!!!! Unfortunately, one of the Kulich's didn't rise properly nor bake so we only had one which we didn't bother to decorate.  Instead we ate it the next morning for breakfast!! Luckily, it was really tasty and fully cooked through.  Thought I would share a photo of what a proper Kulich is supposed to look like!
Nice, right?!!

I think I gained back the weight I lost during Lent with two slices of Kulich and Syrnaya Pascha!! The Pascha cheese is made with quark cheese, vanilla bean, whipping cream, sugar and something else really fattening....oh ya, butter!

As for the service, the most important part of Lent, we started the service at 11:30.  Then at midnight, that's when the joyous part of the service begins and we shout out "Khristos Voskrese" and "Voistinu Voskrese" as a reply to however shouted out the first part!! We try to do it in a bunch of other languages as well such as Greek, English of course, and some other one I can't remember!! It's a very exciting part of the service.  After the service was finished, it's traditional, for I think Eastern Europeans and Russians, to greet each person in the parish with "Khristos Voskrese" and kiss the cheeks three times.  Fortunately, we have a small parish because usually this takes awhile to get through everyone!
The service ended at 2 am and we feasted and had some wine until 3 am. I was exhausted but exhilarated at the same time. We also have a tradition where we each have an egg and we "war" or "bash" our eggs together and see who's egg will break first.  This involves some much practiced strategy for one person to win and still have their egg uncracked.  I figured out the trick when I was around 13 years old! I won't tell you what the trick is just in case you are invited to do this at some point in the future!! I didn't win this year because others out smarted me and my egg!!

The next day, both my Nana and I worked hard on preparing the dinner for the family.  I actually didn't really get a chance to visit with anyone because I was so busy cooking and cleaning afterwards!!  Here's some photos of the table and our meal.
It was a lovely dinner and a lovely Pascha.  Full of joy and celebration.  I will leave you with a photo of my finished Quaker design, stitched for myself, and some pictures of spring trees and flowers.

Had to include some really cute photos of Titus playing with his mink. Yes, I did type mink.  It is a piece of mink my Nana saved from some old jacket she had.  I thought it would be a good toy.  He loves it!!

He soooo doesn't look happy there!! LOL!!!

Oh right, almost forgot! It's IHSW this weekend!!! If you haven't signed up before, do so! Just click the hermit crab picture and it will take you directly there! I hope to try and work more on Jane and TBF and perhaps start another small...we'll see!!

Thanks for your lovely comments! Hugs to all and Happy Stitching!!!
